3RD DISTANT REPLAYS “TRIPLE PLAY TRIVIA” CONTEST WINNER ANNOUNCED; ENTER TODAY & YOU COULD WIN A FREE DISTANT REPLAYS T-SHIRT TOO!

DUAL TITLE LOOKING DUBIOUS

DUAL TITLE LOOKING DUBIOUS

I went overboard.  I took it personally that for the first 2 contests, I couldn’t stump ONE person in the Distant Replays “Triple Play Trivia” contest. So I dug deep and came up with the following:

1) UCLA has a 2010 Softball Championship trophy on their shelf already.  If the Men win, will that mark the first time in the history of the CWS that one school captures the crown for both genders?  2) If  it’s not, what school did it first?  If it is, what school came closest in the past?  3) What school was the last to have dual champions in the same year in a different sport, and what school and sport was it?

In my quest for stumpage, when I asked “What team came closest?”, I opened a can of subjective worms as pointed out by entries Jeff Shirrell and William Evans, and now I DON’T EVEN KNOW the correct answer!  I also opened a can of “scare off people from entering the contest because too much Google research was involved.”  So not only did I screw up with question # 2, I realized I should have specified different titles for different genders in question # 3, and screwed that one up too (Connecticut would have been the correct answer for different genders.  DUKE in Lacrosse & Hoops in 2010 for men as customer Kevinnick Pong pointed out, and who knows about rowing, tennis, track & field, swimming, polo, etc.  ….oy vey.)!!

To sum up, FUBAR can best describe things for this entry, and I apologize.  I do know that no team has won a dual gender baseball/softball title in the same year, and thought that led into a good group of questions – wrong!  Unless UCLA can win 2 in a row after losing to South Carolina last night in Game #1 of the College World Series, the no-dual gender winner fact for baseball/softball will remain.

So who wins the FREE Distant Replays branded T-shirt this week?  I simply put all of the entries in a hat for the drawing, and picked Jeff Shirrell from Indianapolis, Indiana as the winner.  In honor of his Grandfather who practiced orthopedic surgery for 50+ years & graduated Medical school at West Virginia, Jeff proudly picks this shirt which he will wear when his beloved Purdue gear is in the wash!  Congrats Jeff!

Now for the final installment, & 3-part question ( it will be easier!) of the “Triple Play Trivia” contest (The first 10 people to answer the questions correctly will be entered into a drawing for a FREE Distant Replays Branded T-shirt of their choice.*):

1)  South Carolina is one victory away from their first College World series title.  They came close a few times before.  The same team beat them twice.  Who beat em?

2) What pitcher from the team that beat the Gamecocks, holds the NCAA record for pitching wins against zero losses in one season, and how many was it?

3) What former Texas pitching teammate of Roger Clemens was with him in the 1986 World Series for the Boston Red Sox?

Enter your answers in the post/view comment section at the bottom of this post, and we’ll announce the winner this coming Thursday after the completion of the College World Series.  LET’S SEE THOSE GUESSES & GOOD LUCK!

25% OFF SALE ON NEW APPAREL LINE OF SATURDAY MORNING TV T-SHIRTS!

BEST VILLAIN, BAR NONE

BEST VILLAIN, BAR NONE

Comfort.  Joy.  One-Zee pajamas.  Capes.  Saturday morning TV. I clearly remember wrapping my super-soft, broken-in, “blanky” around my neck (like a cape), running into my closet (pretending it was a phone booth), then busting out yelling the famous words at the top of my lungs, “Have no fear, Underdog is here!‘ so all in my house could hear.  I’m a very big baby because I get misty eyed when I think back to the early 1960’s when I was a kid, and everything was so simple then.  All was SAFE & GOOD in the world (Who knew from Vietnam, Kennedy & MLK assassinations, & LSD?).  For me, nothing was better than snuggling about in my jammies on a Saturday morning, eating a big bowl of  Cap’n Crunch, and watching Underdog save Polly Purebred from Simon Barsinister (I actually wanted Simon to take over the world a few times “SIMON SAYS…..”).  The good & evil in my world was an open & shut case every Saturday morning, with good winning every time.  Underdog defeats Simon Barsinister & Riff Raff. Rocky & Bullwinkle defeat Boris & Natasha.

UPLIFTING

UPLIFTING

Of course every generation looks back and reminisces how it was all better and simpler “when THEY were a kid” and I have to say I am no different.  “They don’t make them like they used to” really seems to fit the bill when it comes to Saturday morning TV.  Hey, I’m all about progress and innovation, but the cartoons I see today seem too “computerized” and even too realistic (alright, I do love Spongebob Squarepants)!  Granted, Jessica Rabbit is hot, but she’s no NATASHA!! Boris never had it so good.

I didn’t realize at the time, and am forever grateful, that shows like Mr. Magoo and Underdog were merely “gateway” shows which led me to enjoy later 60’s classics such as Gilligan’s Island and Hollywood Squares.  Indeed, the most recognizable voice of Mr. Magoo was none other than that of Jim Backus, the beloved Thurston Howell III from Gilligan’s Island, and the crackly voice of Underdog belonged to Wally Cox who was a regular on the Hollywood Squares.

HE'S HERE

Distant Replays is happy that the folks at Original Retro brand continue to bring great memories back to life, with the addition of Saturday Morning TV to their ever growing library of the best vintage apparel on the planet.  Distant Replays is also happy to offer 25% OFF every Saturday Morning TV shirt on our website!  Just enter the code CTOON @ checkout to receive your discount.  This offer expires this Sunday, 2/21/10 so don’t miss out!

That super-soft, broken-in, “blanky” I was talking about?  Just give any of the new Underdog, Mr. Magoo, or Rocky & Bullwinkle shirts a try, and you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Can it be that it was so simple then?  Yes it was, and is again with Distant Replays.
