"FROM ONE BEER LOVER TO ANOTHER"

With the 4th of July vacation already forgotten, and the Lebron James “Decision” thankfully over, Summer’s in full swing and it’s time to talk the four B’s; Beaches, Baseball, Barbecue, and Beer.  And I am not talking about microbrews or flavored/seasonal brews.  I am talking about macro-brewed, thirst-quenching beer that looks the same going in, as it does coming out (pale yellow);  beers not ashamed to be called crisp.  Got the picture?  Beers best served in cans; preferably 16 oz. cans, tall boys, or directly from a keg.

In no particular order, these are the beers (and the links to the Original Retro Brand t-shirts now featured on Distant Replays) our dads drank;  the beers we drank when we came of age at 18 or 21, depending on the era.  These brews did not contain honey, or wheat, or raspberries.  They were brewed by blue collar guys.  They were beer-flavored, and they are/were brewed and consumed 365 days a year.

10.  Stroh’s - This motor city staple was a veritable “muscle car” in a can.  When an auto worker came off the line and downed a boilermaker, you think he dropped his shot of bourbon into an India pale ale or European pilsner with a girl’s name (Stella)?

9.  Schlitz Malt Liquor – The first piece in my one-time beer can collection was the 24 oz. “tennis ball can” of the Bull.  And as the saying goes, if you messed with the bull, you got the horns.  That first malt liquor hangover was like a rite of passage.

8.  Colt 45 Malt Liquor – Not the first malt liquor brewed in the U.S., but among the first generation.  And who can forget the coolness of Colt pitchman Billy Dee Williams?

7.  Falstaff – Like Luca Brasi (The Godfather), Falstaff “sleeps with the fishes”.  It has not been brewed since 2005.  And like Luca, Falstaff was the “go to guy” when you needed to get the job done.

6.  Lone Star – I’m gonna take a Mulligan here because I have previously mandated these beers are best served in a metal container, but Americans are essentially cowboys and there is no more essential cowboy beer than a long-neck bottle of Lone Star when it’s time to “cowboy up”.

5.  Olympia – You have to respect a beer that endured prohibition, and was originally brewed by a guy named Leopold Schmidt.  Now that’s what I call beer pedigree.

4. Old Milwaukee – Remember the 1970’s and 1980’s when Americans didn’t care about carbon footprints or the ozone layer?  Remember the Old Milwaukee tag line; “It doesn’t get any better than this”? Is there anything more American than a plastic or styrofoam cooler full of Old Milwaukee at the beach, softball game, or summer picnic?  Forget apple pie and baseball, give me ribs, hot dogs, potato salad and a case of Old Milwaukee on ice!

3.  Old Style - But, if you disagree and baseball is part of the equation, a draft of Old Style guzzled from a stadium cup in the bleachers at Wrigley Field, during daylight;  if not distinctly American, is certainly as Chicago as Al Capone and deep dish pizza.

2. & 1. Beer Caps – The kind you wear on your head.  I know the title said TOP 10 shirts, but we only have 8 styles (more coming soon)!  We also have the coolest soft back mesh, beaten up, distressed beer trucker hats to hook up with our shirts.

I want to thank my good buddy, the “Bourbon Cowboy”, for lending his scribe for this thirst quenching beer blog.  Atlanta’s very own Bourbon Cowboy has penned drinking columns and “Best Bar” lists for Atlanta Magazine, Creative Loafing, and The Atlanta Press.  Although he retired as a professional drinker in 2003, he still drinks beer when he is thirsty.

JUST CHILLIN'

It’s about time we freshened up Distant Replays with some new “old” baseball gear.  Who better then our long time friends at Ebbets Field Flannels to come to the rescue?  After all, it was an old Ebbets 1940’s Canadiens Hockey lace up jersey I saw in an airplane catalog about 15 years ago, that got me “throwback” crazy.   I nearly plotzed when I saw their Minor league & Negro League jerseys, jackets, and caps which are simply the best, period.   While you can’t go wrong with any Ebbets product, here are my favorites that just came through the door:

10. Chicago Whales 1915 Baseball Cap: Simple & Oh So Sweet!  Plus I love Whales.

9. Flatbush Baseball Club 1913 Jersey: Anything Brooklyn gets a thumbs up.

8. 1949 Hollywood Stars cap: I needed a cap that had the first letter of my last name, and this takes care of that.

7. 1953 Hot Spring Bathers: Dude taking a bath in what looks like ice cubes with his cleats on?  Cool.

6.  1967 Las Vegas Wranglers T: What happens in Vegas doesn’t have to stay in Vegas – I WANT THIS SHIRT!

5. 1954 L.A. Angels Cap: Randy Newman’s anthem sums it up; “I love L.A. – WE LOVE IT!”

4. 1956 Mexico City Red Devils T: Two devils having a baseball catch; heavenly.

3. 1944 Portland Beavers Cap: I needed a cap with the first letter of my son’s name, and this takes care of that.  Yes, I love beavers too.

PADRES OR ORANGEMEN?

2. 1953 Eau Claire Bears: Hank Aaron is one my favorite players ever, and he had a short stint with the Bears.  Basically if you use any cartoon animal in a logo, I’m in love.

1. 1950 San Diego Padres Cap: While I have no feelings either way for the Padres, this cap serves well as a Syracuse coach’s cap.  Not needed for anybody’s first or last name as I have that covered.

DUAL TITLE LOOKING DUBIOUS

I went overboard.  I took it personally that for the first 2 contests, I couldn’t stump ONE person in the Distant Replays “Triple Play Trivia” contest. So I dug deep and came up with the following:

1) UCLA has a 2010 Softball Championship trophy on their shelf already.  If the Men win, will that mark the first time in the history of the CWS that one school captures the crown for both genders?  2) If  it’s not, what school did it first?  If it is, what school came closest in the past?  3) What school was the last to have dual champions in the same year in a different sport, and what school and sport was it?

In my quest for stumpage, when I asked “What team came closest?”, I opened a can of subjective worms as pointed out by entries Jeff Shirrell and William Evans, and now I DON’T EVEN KNOW the correct answer!  I also opened a can of “scare off people from entering the contest because too much Google research was involved.”  So not only did I screw up with question # 2, I realized I should have specified different titles for different genders in question # 3, and screwed that one up too (Connecticut would have been the correct answer for different genders.  DUKE in Lacrosse & Hoops in 2010 for men as customer Kevinnick Pong pointed out, and who knows about rowing, tennis, track & field, swimming, polo, etc.  ….oy vey.)!!

To sum up, FUBAR can best describe things for this entry, and I apologize.  I do know that no team has won a dual gender baseball/softball title in the same year, and thought that led into a good group of questions – wrong!  Unless UCLA can win 2 in a row after losing to South Carolina last night in Game #1 of the College World Series, the no-dual gender winner fact for baseball/softball will remain.

So who wins the FREE Distant Replays branded T-shirt this week?  I simply put all of the entries in a hat for the drawing, and picked Jeff Shirrell from Indianapolis, Indiana as the winner.  In honor of his Grandfather who practiced orthopedic surgery for 50+ years & graduated Medical school at West Virginia, Jeff proudly picks this shirt which he will wear when his beloved Purdue gear is in the wash!  Congrats Jeff!

CRAZY 8's

Things are getting very interesting in the 2010 College World Series.  TCU scores 8 runs in the 8th inning in miraculous comeback to stun the Seminoles, and Clemson hangs on to beat Oklahoma.  UCLA looks to join their women counterparts in a run to the title (UCLA Women defeated Arizona to win their 11th Softball National Championship earlier this month), and will have to go through TCU to move on to the next round.  UCLA knocked off TCU earlier this week, and the rematch takes place tomorrow afternoon.  South Carolina is also in a rematch, and looks to avenge their opening series game loss to Oklahoma tonight.  Gone are early favorites Arizona State and the 2 Florida’s, as the series moves into the “do or die” phase.

“Do or die” translated into “Do and try” for the Distant Replays “Triple Play Trivia” Contest contestants.  Everybody who participated tried to win the FREE Original Retro Brand T-Shirt, but all we could do is award one winner.  Every person who participated got all of the answers correct AGAIN (got em’ all right in the first contest).  The lucky person to have his name drawn as the winner this time is Peter Duthoy of Frederick, Maryland.  He chose this Notre Dame shirt as his prize.  Congrats Peter!
